Social media marketing is a crucial component of any internet marketing strategy. After all, Statista reports that in 2020 there were more than 3.6 billion social media users in the world, and that number is expected to grow to nearly 4.41 billion by 2025! But how do you reach more people among the cacophony of noise on most social media platforms? One way is through social sharing.

What is Social Sharing?

Dictionary.com defines social sharing as “the activity of sharing photos, videos, links, etc., on a social-media website, within an interactive application, or through other online channels.” Social sharing is similar to that 80s shampoo commercial that states, “I told two friends about it. And they told two friends… and so on and so on and so on.” Social sharing is a way to utilize current followers to reach even more people.

But getting people to share your content can be a real challenge. Hootsuite reports that the average social media user only shares one post every month. So how do you help ensure that it’s one of your posts that is getting shared? Here are four tips to increase your chances.

Create Compelling Shareable Content

The first step to getting more shares is to create compelling, eye-catching content that people want to share. Here are a few tips:

  • Mobile-Friendly – One study found 99% of social media users access networks using mobile devices, and 78% use their mobile phones exclusively to access networks (while only 1.32% use a desktop exclusively). So, if you don’t want to lose your audience, make sure your posts are mobile-friendly. Social media platforms do a lot of the work for you, but you can take additional steps such as making certain graphics are legible and that you include line breaks and punctuation in your captions.

  • Format – Consider what formats your audience wants to see and which are shared most often. For example, one report found that videos on Twitter are six times more likely to be retweeted than Tweets with images and three times more likely to be retweeted than Tweets with GIFs. And Tweets with static images get shared 150% more than text-only Tweets.

  • Captions – One way to grab attention is with a catchy caption. And once you have their attention, encourage sharing with hashtags and a strong call-to-action.

  • Trending Topics – If people are already talking about something, why not join the conversation if it makes sense for your business. There’s even a term for it – trendjacking. One caveat – know your target audience and use humor cautiously.

  • Encourage a Response – You want to engage your audience and start a conversation with social media. Questions or polls provide followers an opportunity to bring new people into the conversation.

Include Social Sharing in Your Marketing Emails

Social media and email marketing work incredibly well together. You can use your emails to attract additional social media followers and use social media to increase the size of your email marketing contact list. If they’ve given you their email address, they have some interest in your product or service and are more likely to follow you on social media.

Include links in your emails encouraging them to follow you and include links that make it easy to share your content on their social media pages.

Give Your Audience a Reason to Share your Content

Most people want something in return for their efforts, so if you want them to share your posts, give them a reason to do so. “Back in the day” the way to encourage people to share your content was with contests. If they liked and/or shared your post, they would be entered to win a prize.

Today’s technology allows businesses to reward everyone for sharing. For example, there are apps that will enable you to upload a guide that people can download and share.

Look at What is Working (and What Isn’t)

Most social media platforms provide analytics that help you get to know your audience so that you can provide better content at just the right time. For example, Facebook Insights show audience demographics and key metrics, such as which posts get the most likes, comments, and shares and when most of your audience is active on Facebook.

How to Simplify Social Media Marketing

Many business owners find it challenging to follow social media trends and regularly post relevant, shareable posts.

PMI can help simplify the process with a social media dashboard system that provides access to all your social media accounts in one place, creating engaging and sharable content, and much more.
